冥想真的诱发了ASC吗？依Tart的主观定义，的确是这样的，因为人们感觉他们的心理功能被彻底改变了。关于客观的测量，从20世纪50年代就出现了许多相关的研究，其中一些使用脑电波技术。研究员携带早期的笨重脑电波仪器到寺庙或印度瑜珈修炼者的山洞中去，记录他们在听到饶钹响、看到刺眼光线以及脚伸入冷水时的脑电波（Bagchi&Wener，l957）。他们发现冥想者脑中不但出现许多通常伴随放松觉醒出现的频率为8~12赫兹的阿尔法波，而且它不会像在非冥想者脑中一样收到声音或光线的干扰。这些似乎是感觉收缩的证据。
